My CAP Journey (Competency Assessment Program, New Zealand)

Hi again, I just want to share some thoughts and ideas for fellow Nurses who wants to come and work as a Registered Nurse here in New Zealand. this i what I know of and based on what I experienced.

What is Competency Assessment Program?
This is the program required by the Nursing Council of New Zealand to ensure Internationally Qualified Nurses are able to practice and demonstrate the ability to meet the Competencies of being a Registered Nurse after the completion of the program.

What do you do during the course and how long is the course?
Length of the CAP course will depend on the school, but the minimum is 6 weeks. 2 weeks of theory- this takes place at the school and then another 4 weeks of placement (practical nursing). Some school requires a maximum of 3 months to complete the CAP course.

The theory aspect will focus on the Nursing practice of New Zealand and history of the country and introduction to the culture. I had my CAP course at Otago Polytechnic and we had the mentioned topics plus return demonstrations on NGT insertion, catheterization and CPR. We also had demonstrations in using lifting equipment (hoists, slippery sam sheets, lifting belts, etc) used here in New Zealand. We also had to pass a couple of quizzes on drug calculations. We had to complete a comprehensive NCP, Nursing Assessment, and Critical Reflections on the 4 domains of Nursing. It was a full 8 weeks. Some schools they just require  one exemplar (it's like a summary of the 4 domains of nursing, easier than doing 4 separate reflections).

The placement period will be your time to shine! You may be assigned to an aged care facility, acute hospital setting, district nursing and others. You will be given the chance to experience the nursing practice setting of NZ. Where ever you will be placed, take every opportunity to show them how competent and deserving you are to be registered as a nurse of NZ. Borrowing Rihanna's lyrics, "Shine bright like a diamond".. :D

You will be handled by a Preceptor (CI) who will be with you all through the placement period and who will assess your performance. You will also have a tutor (from the school) who will over see the progress you make on the paper requirements.

Does someone fail the CAP course?
Yes, I actually did fail my course, (I'll defend myself on that and say, I did not deserve what my tutor and preceptor did). What I did was to complain on the result of my assessment with the help of my sister. How did it happen I was able to still pass the course? As I went to sign a document that states I failed my course, the course coordinator (who was also my tutor) went to ask the nursing head if I still needed to sign or do anything before I go. The head then suggested I extend for another 2 weeks back to the old placement, I refused to be back at that old batty place. My sister called and talked to my tutor, she was very mad and unapologetic for how she talked to her, I guess she was just really mad to what happened to me. But there will be no point for you to go back to the same old placement who has already given you a negative feedback. Request politely for another facility, with a new tutor and a new preceptor. I got this one and for 2 weeks, I had to show them what I got and finally, I passed with flying honors.

You will be given a chance to prove you meet the competencies set out by the Nursing council, since most CAP course finishes on the 6th- 8th week (depends on the school again), you still have 2-4 weeks chance to meet the competencies.

Remember: DON'T JUST ACCEPT WHAT THEY TELL YOU! (well, that is, if you really believe that it was an unfair decision and that you could provide some evidence that negates the result of assessment)

Who decides if you pass or fail?
From my experience, the preceptor will do your final assessment. My second preceptor told me that you have to be present when your preceptor is doing the final competency assessment. This did not happen with my first preceptor, it was the nurse manager who did the assessment and she did it by herself. And the reason you have to do it together is to give you a chance to defend yourself in case, your preceptor will say you have not met a certain competency.

And of course, you have to complete the school requirements for you to finish the program successfully.

How much does the course cost?
It depends again on the school but it ranges from NZD 5500 to NZD 8000. Of course, that is just the tuition fee/ school fee. You will have to pay for your own board and lodging. Rent is paid weekly, cost of rent depends. You will really invest before becoming a Registered Nurse here in NZ.

What happens after you pass the CAP course?

Well, relax and enjoy! Wait for your Registration certificate then apply for your Annual Practicing Certificate. You need your APC to work as an RN, it comes with a fee (NZD 110 annually).

While waiting, you have to think about your visa. Usually, the Immigration NZ will give you 3- 4 months of visitor's visa when coming in for the CAP course. You can renew your visit visa provided you have the financial support. Check the requirements http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migrant/stream/visit/visitors/default.htm.

Next step: FIND A JOB and fulfill your middle earth nursing journey!

best of luck to all incoming CAP students.. :D

******Hi everyone, I am really sorry for not answering many of your questions. I have been really busy these past few months that I haven't checked this blog. So, I've read your comments and thank you (thousand times) for those taking time to answer questions of other hopeful (then successful) applicants. Certainly, there's like several changes in the process with NCNZ being online now and to which I don't have any idea how it works. So, once again, Thank you, Maraming Salamat po, to everyone who answered. See you all here in NEW ZEALAND. Be kind to one another. Best of Luck to everyone!!!

  1. Good day ma'am, came acrossed your blog about Otago Polytechnic. I am also planning to take my CAP there but I read your blog and honestly, I'm really anxious now. May I ask about wht do you mean by critical reflections on the 4 domains of nursing? How was your training at the hospital? Are you always with your preceptor? Do they let you do the procedures alone or with their supervisions? Hope you can give me insights about what should I expect during the program. Thank you very much!

    1. hi there, congratulations for getting closer to becoming a RN here. First thing first, you have to know that Otago Polytechnic is considered as one of the best nursing school here and so, expect that they have a higher standard than other schools. Second, you have to get used to not calling anyone ma'am or sir here, they prefer you call them with their first names, so for a start, call me Rachel ;). Critical reflections are part of your assessment where you will write about an experience at your placement and how you reacted to this. You will discuss the outcomes, how it affected you personally or culturally and you will do further research as how it is supported or connected to nursing practice here in nz. Don't worry, they will teach you how to do it and you will have countless sources to base it with. With regards to your placement, your preceptor will be with you all the time but when you get used to the routine then they will allow you some independence. Placements will depend, so, you might not be placed in an acute hospital setting, you may be placed in a rest home. But where ever you may be assigned, embrace it and do your best. Avoid the phrase "because in the Philippines, it's like this", expect it will be a different practice because you are here in nz. Unless, you have an experience that can be of help in a situation, you are very welcome to suggest it. Common procedures which we perform freely in the phils are not applicable here, we need to be certified as competent first before we are allowed to do it (catheterization, cannulations, etc). The 4 domains of nursing lists the competency that you have to meet. check this out:file:///C:/Users/pisaywagay/Downloads/Examples%20-%20Registered%20nurse%20combined%20self%20and%20senior%20nurse%20assessment.pdf

As i've said, don't get too anxious, you will be guided all throughout. Always ask if you are not sure, be confident but not to a point where you present yourself as conceited. Let me know if you still have any questions. All the best!

  2. Thank you very much Ms. Rachel for the wonderful information that you have provided. May I ask if you have any idea about the failure rate in the CAP in Otago? When you extended the program for another 2 weeks, did you pay additional fees for it? What about your tutor? Do you meet her on a daily basis or by schedule? What about your duty? Is it 5 consecutive days a week? Thank you! :)

    Replies
    1. hmmm.. failure rate? nah, no idea but they do fail once in a while, in my case, i think i just did not have a good rapport with the nurse manager plus the rest home was really horrible (i know, i'm just bitter..haha) If you extend for 2 weeks, you don't have to pay. You will meet your tutor depending on her schedules, so, a minimum of once a week especially if you will be placed farther from the city. But you will always be able to communicate with them through emails and calls. And your shifts will be from mondays to fridays (as far as i know, because your tutors are not working weekends and you may need to contact them during shifts). When is your CAP schedule?

      Delete
  3. Thank you again Ms. Rachel, next month will be the start of my CAP, regarding the shift is it 8 hours/day? What time of the day or it depends to the clinical placement?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. yes, it will be 8 hours a day, and shifts will depend. You can have the usual AM,PM,NIGHT but will depend where you will be placed (Community nursing- expect you will have day shifts only)

  4. Hello! Ms. Rachel, may I ask about your attire during the intake? Did they require you to wear a uniform in your clinical placement? How about in the classroom? Are books included in the tuition or did you pay for it? Sorry for bombarding you with so many questions.. thank you again and take care! :)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. hi there again, we had casual clothes during the 2 weeks lecture and for the clinical placement, it's usually white collared shirt and black trousers (preferably slacks). We did not use books, they will provide you hand outs and you have the library and internet to use for researches. This was 2012 but i think there's no drastic changes so chances are that it is still the same. have fun on your CAP!

      Delete
    2. Is it the same with those who were assigned in the acute hospital setting? Is it difficult to find a job after the cap or are nursing jobs abundant there? Regarding the bullying and racism, may I ask about the evidences that you have presented? Thank you ms.rachel, I will! Take care always and may you have more blessings in life!

      Delete
    3. Yes, some of my mates wore the same, on the other hand, the hospital will provide them with the uniform, so don't think too much of it. There are always jobs if you don't choose, meaning if you don't set sight on acute hospital setting (it's quite hard) but if you are placed in an acute setting, usually they absorb you. Check the areas of nursing that is still included in the long term skills shortage list http://www.immigration.govt.nz/opsmanual/46052.htm. Some nursing areas are not qualified now for Permanent Residency and this should be your priority. You don't want to work in a nursing area which will be unable to support your application for residency. What I'm just saying is, if they offer you a job at an aged care facility (Rest home), might as well take it, you can always transfer to an acute hospital after. But do check updates on this as New Zealand immigration is pushing for more areas of nursing to be removed from the list. Meanwhile, on my bullying and racism case, I was just lucky that I had documents to present (previous assessments and emails) plus the testimony of my real preceptor was considered. Don't focus too much on what happened to me, just swift through the course and build rapport with your preceptor and tutor. You'll be fine, let me know if you still have any questions.

    4. another thing, if you have a good acute setting experience in the PI, you will have a very good chance of easily getting a job at an acute setting here. :D

  5. Good day Ms.Rachel, I heard that there's an exam after the CAP in Otago? Is it difficult? Can you please give me an insight about what should I expect during the program like what topics do I need to study... preparations that I need to do for the CAP. Please help me. Thank you!

    1. hi there,
yes there will be examinations: drug calculations and return demonstrations (NGT, male IDC insertion, and CPR- infant/adult). but don't worry because you will have heaps of practices before you will do it. I'm not sure though if they added more to these. When is your arrival here and are you with an agency?

  6. Hello Ms.Rachel! Yes, I'm with an agency and I'll be there by 1st week of Oct.. btw, I've worked in the or for nearly 2 years and only have a little experience in the ward, I really wish this could help me to land a job in the future but first I really hope that I can be a nzrn like you.. thank you very much for all the encouragement and advices! :)

    2. hi gem,
      check the replies below:

thank you for entertaining my questions, as i know no one in nz. i might study in otago in the first week of august, i am thinking whether I should take the offer of the school for accommodation which costs 200nzd, but since im on a budget.,im wondering if maybe you have any suggestions of a good place I can stay?
----Unfortunately, all my friends there have already relocated and the only person i knew who rented a room for me and my friend is unsure if there will be a vacancy. Another question, is the 200NZD a weekly rent? Is that Beaumont accommodations?

when you went there did you know anyone (friends or relatives?)
---- Fortunately, I have my sister here in Auckland

is it true that the first two weeks are for theoretical only? then afterwards will have duty to a different place?
---- Yes, 2 weeks theory then placement

am i paid during the rle? / can i have part time job for extra money?
---- No, you will not be paid during your RLE and I don't think you will be able to work part time, first, the requirements are too much and you will need all your spare time to meet the requirements and second, I think you will be given tourist visa and working will violate its condition.

what was the uniform of otago?
-----During my time (2012), there was no definite uniform, just white collared shirt and black slacks or trousers during the placement. However, you can always ask as they might have changed.

  10. hi gem,
i will answer the following here as someone's asking for the same question/s, hitting two birds w/ one stone *wink*. I apologize for replying quite late.

******would you have any idea how much is the ideal money a student should be bringing to survive in nz during cap days?

    - this is quite difficult to answer but these are the things you need to consider:
    1. rent- paid weekly and depending on your accommodation it could cost you 100-150 pw.
of course, it could be higher depending on where you will stay.
    2. food- it's not usually included in rents. If you're not a picky eater, 50 NZD will suffice for
week. i used to just buy boxes of oats, a gallon of fresh milk & 6 pottles of yoghurt + any
    fruits on sale for additional.
    3. miscellaneous- toiletries and others- 20 dollars

this estimation is from what i spent when i was doing the CAP. As you can imagine, I was not eating the best food (famine period, literally). You might be tempted to buy from shops- clothing sales & etc, get a grip on yourself and keep that tie tight around your wallet ;) . Ask if there are Chinese shops or flea market schedules (usually Saturday or Sunday morning) and try to buy your food from those places as they are usually cheaper compared to supermart prices (we have Countdown, New World and Pak 'n Save here); among these 3 mentioned grocery shops, Pak 'n Save has the cheapest prices- go there first. There's also the dairy (that's similar to 7/11 or the equivalent of sari-sari stores back home but more posh in presentation) have usually more expensive prices on their goods so avoid them as much as possible.

You will always have a classmate who will want to buy stuff, shop for clothes, bags, or shoes and this will be a very big challenge (for me anyway, who doesn't like shopping?). These unnecessary buys will always cause trouble with the budget.

But if you are a thrifty and a good money keeper, then you should not have a problem.

*****days pass by but im still scared of my future as a nurse in nz... hoping I'd be as lucky as you? :)
    - my dear, fear is a good thing because it will keep you on your toes, don't just let it overwhelm you. NZ is meant for you and you will have a good future here, CLAIM IT!

Let me know if I can help you with anything else.

    all the best!

    ReplyDelete
  11. hi there,
*****i forgot to ask for your opinion, my new dilemma though, is that i am thinking if i should buy all the food for myself (so i can keep track of the expenses) or share expenses with would be roommates for the food. i wonder which will be cheaper?
---- Gem, if they will be same as you with money saving scheme in mind, why not? but if not, then buying your own maybe the best option for you.

    cheers!

  12. Hey there Rachel. This is Raymund and I am fro the Philippines. Thanks for this blog I get to see what I will experience soon when I will have my CAP at Otago. Thanks for the tips and advices. Im so excited to get there. I wish that I will be there on October 2015 CAP intake since I am still on the waiting list now. Hmmm can you suggest some affordable accommodations near the school? I read about some accommodation in the schools website like the College like and etc. can you suggest one? Thanks. Godbless.

    Replies
    1. Hi Raymund, sorry for replying really late. Anyway, I don't know any accommodations and most of my friends have moved out of Dunedin already. Are you with an agency? Usually, they will be able to hook you up with accommodations especially for the 1st 2 weeks. I do remember my classmates before were housed in Beaumont House (http://www.beaumonthouse.net). You can always email them and inquire. Also, you can check out Trade Me (www.trademe.co.nz) and go to flatmates wanted on the BROWSE icon--> Otago--> Dunedin---> City Center, and this will show you all available apartments for rent. I'd suggest you look for a closer location to school as transpo can be quite expensive. I'm not aware of the college offering for housing but you can always ask, it might be more expensive though. Try to find a flat that is not over 140NZD per week. My room before cost me 135NZD per week and it was expensive already plus I had to pay for fare to school. I suppose these expenses will be worth it after finding work but still, if we can save, why not, isn't it?

Hope you will get the slot and find a place for you.

      Delete
    2. Hi there Rachel, thank you very much for the reply. It was a big help for me. Anyways I got a slot at Otago already and I will be having the October Intake 2015. I'm currently working on my visa now. I would like to ask you the following:

      1. During the CAP is there any uniform required by the school that you must wear or they will provide you with it. What is really the prescribed uniform so I can prepare in advance.

      2. When you get a job after the programme. What uniform do you wear? I would also like to prepare for it so I can bring it to NZ.

      3. Are there any cheap winter or woolen clothes available there or its more practical if I'll buy it here in Philippines.

      4. Any tips in having CAP in OTAGO. Thanks.

Thank you so much Rachel. Godbless.

      Delete
    3. hi there, apologies for answering too late again :D
      1. We have not been required to have any uniform during the 2 week theory part. We wore white collared shirt + black slacks and any comfortable shoes. However, I understand that some facilities would provide or lend some uniforms while you are having your placement.
2.Facilities usually provide for the uniforms, don't fuss about this. but maybe, just bring some black slacks.
      3. Clothing are quite expensive in here and there's not much choices such as we have in the Philippines. But we have Savemart here which is similar to our Ukay stores there. If you are able to bring winter clothing, it should be cheaper.
      4. Just remember, Otago is quite a handful for CAP compared to other schools offering CAP, more paper works and longer course (minimum of 8 weeks, compared to other schools who have 6 weeks minimum). Be humble, always be respectful, communication is very important. There is no stupid question here, keep asking if you are unsure of anything, they'd appreciate it. And refrain from comparing Philippine nsg setting unless you think it is helpful in a situation which our own practice maybe applicable to a situation you are encountering.

      Best of luck. Cheers!

  13. Here's another question from a nurse hopeful; please feel free to answer her questions and pitch in your wise thoughts on it.

Hi Ms. Rachel..first of..thank you very much for this very informative blog. Kudos to your effort in going out of your way to share your experiences. I have a few inquiries, which I hope from your first hand experience, you can shed light on. I am in the process of starting my application, however, based on the seminars that I have attended here in the Phils., there are some agencies indirectly saying that it may be a risk for one to take the Bridging Program or to undergo the CAP because the visa is actually a visitor's visa which usually expires in a month or two after the program (??). It may be a gamble to go through the program and not find work even after passing the CAP and getting a license. One more thing, some of the speakers talked about the market chances wherein locals or Filipino nurses based in NZ will be given priority since they actually have experienced working in the country itself. It appears that an applicant may have a higher chance of getting hired if so. Any truth about this? I just want to cover all my bases and make a more informed decision as to how I can go about with my application. BTW, the assessment fee is now 650 NZ dollars :( . Secondly, is two years of experience sufficient for me to compete with other applicants, at least on the outset? I am just a bit concerned about this as well because it is going to affect the visa above as I mentioned. Please advise. I know the questions I have may not actually be directly related to the CAP but I hope you can spare me a few minutes to answer these queries. I will forever be indebted. Munyamanak in advance. :)

For others who are active in this blog, please share your experiences about how long you've processed your papers from the assessment until getting a CAP slot. Are there also other tips that you've found useful from your application. Hoping to hear from others as well.

Thank you again Rachel and to fellow hopefuls who'll be responding. :)

    1. Hi there,
New Zealand now has too many overseas students, especially from the PI and India. Here's my 2 cents of thoughts between CAP and coming as student visa.

CAP course is completed within 8-12 weeks, usually it takes 12 weeks if they ask you to extend but otherwise, the program usually finishes as early as 6 weeks. True that they give you 3 or 4 months of visitor's visa but you can always extend that, of which I know the immigration always grants. (You may need a show money though to ensure the immigration that you have enough finances for your extension. Do you know anyone here? Because they can always help sponsor you and then you don't have to have show money. In my case, my brother-in-law did it for me). Finding a nursing job has not been as easy as before but everyone I knew who just had their CAP has been able to find a job albeit you may need to move outside of auckland. It is also true that they would prefer locals or ex-pats who are here as they already have NZ experience, but it should not dampen your hopes because if you have a good experience overseas, then you do have an extra advantage. Bottomline, coming here straight for CAP is time and money saving, in the sense that you will do the course immediately and you will pay tuition fee once. You have to remember that there are thousands of students here attempting to register as Nurses, so, the earlier you get registered, the better.

Being physically present in the country does give you an edge as the Nursing Council appear to process applications faster compared to our fellows applying in the Philippines. The District Health Boards (these are acute care providers- acute hospital setting) are keen to hire students as Part time health care assistants if you have plans of registering or completing the CAP, this is not an assurance but I see the preference. However, if you come here as a student, you pay twice the money, study thrice the months.

The facilities (Aged Care) and acute hospitals look into your experience and your 2 years of experience is qualified as long as it was in the immediate last 5 years.

I hope I gave you some ideas to come up with the best decision.

      Cheers!

  14. Heaps of thanks Rachel (first name basis na)..hihi.. Seriously, I am really grateful that you took time to explain things in detail and have presented reality in the truest way possible. It will aid me in deciding how and when to lodge my application. Well, unfortunately, I will be doing all things by myself and I likewise don't have any relatives in NZ who could bail me out just in case. But, your info surely helped me have a clearer idea. Oh, I have a friend who just moved there last December but I don't know if I can be sponsored by her because she has just started with her work this month I think.
I am leaning towards undertaking the CAP since, as you mentioned, it is more economically sound and time-efficient. I actually don't mind locations outside Auckland as long as there is an opportunity present.

I just have a thing or two to ask if possible. How about cases of "second coursers"? I've been reading a few forums on this and it also seems that they have a difficulty or have a higher chance of being rejected by the NCNZ. Have you heard of such case and any recent cases?Anyone you know who's had the experience? How about volunteer experience? Will it be considered in the 2-year requirement of the council? Do you know anybody as well?

Grace (I know it was rude of me not to have introduced myself in my previous post since I was all too excited and a bit jumpy that I have found a blog that basically answered many of the questions I had in mind. Still, not an excuse so please pardon my ignorance and inexperience. My first time to respond in such a platform).

Abundant blessing for you even more!

    Replies
    1. Hi Grace (nice meeting you),
      Sorry for the delayed response.
Yes, NCNZ are not very keen to accept 2nd coursers but I know some people who were able to be approved. However, most of these people are already here. I suppose it will always depend on your case officer at the Council. You can always ask the Council: registration@nursingcouncil.org.nz before applying.

Regarding the volunteer experience, has it been stated on your cert that you were a volunteer? Most of the people I know who applied has not used volunteer experience, I think some of them, they were able to have it approved by their job site to change it as Registered Nurse as they were working as one albeit they don't receive salaries. Sorry, I don't really have any idea on this.

If NCNZ rejects, Australia is quite lax in some aspects, but more expensive with the tuition fee which I suppose should not matter as you will be able to earn it quickly once you find a job.

      Cheers!

    2. Thanks a lot again Rachel for the response. These info are indeed helpful and useful in making me have a better decision. I hope you don't mind me dropping by again to ask other questions about your experiences regarding the CAP.
I have considered Australia as well but it's very expensive to study in there and I am sold to the idea of a better situation in NZ. I am happy to have read your suggestions and answers once again.

      More power!

  15. Hi Rachel! :) Thank you very much for sharing about CAP. I am planning to take the 1 year (Level7) course and is currently doing my research about it, but then I saw your blog. I agree with Grace, there are lots of agencies that recommends the 1 year course so I am quite hesitant about the bridging program (since I don't know anything about it because the agencies won't even tell me about it -_-). However, your blog gave me the details and might as well try the CAP program as it appears to be a better choice, since it's cheaper and it's only for 6-8weeks. I'm just wondering how long would it take to become a registered nurse in NZ after the completion of CAP? Thank you again ^^

Alright, it seems that apparently most of the agencies do tell you that coming here as a student would be the fastest and I would agree that at this point in time, it looks like it. However, I just met 2 new RNs at my work place who applied from the Philippines and it took them 6 months (which I think is fantastic, it took me longer due to my paper troubles). They have good job experience though, which, I'm sure has had a big impact. Another friend took a year to process, as well, same case as me, she had difficulty proving some legalities on her curriculum.

If you guys will eventually choose to come as student, I would suggest you PASS your IELTS ASAP and apply at the Nursing Council immediately. The consolation perhaps will be faster processing for CAP (to which I have seen with our fellows who are already here, just took them 2-3 months). I’d suggest you make sure all your papers meet the requirements by the Nursing Council.

You usually would receive your registration 2-4 weeks after the school submits all your completed documents. I just don’t know if that is different now, I’m speaking from 2012. After this, you will need to apply for your Annual Practicing Certificate (APC), which will take the same time. The APC costs 110 NZD, you need this to be able to work as a Nurse, http://www.nursingcouncil.org.nz/Nurses/Annual-practising-certificates.

Another is, you can always find an agent to help your processing, they do come handy when looking for schools to complete the CAP. Some schools arrange with agents apparently, as they are able to provide more students and just take independent applications if they need to fill out some spaces.

Bottom line here is, if you think your application to nursing council will take too long and you cannot wait, Do come as student. But if you can wait, set your sight for CAP. Let me know if I can help you in any way.

      CHEERS!

  17. Hello there! I am so glad to haveco e across your blog. Would you mind if I also have so e questions? I'll be having my CAP at Christchurch in Rannerdale. I was wondering if you can tell me the documents that I need to bring for job application. Also, what vaccines do I need to have before going to NZ? I heard they are expensive their than in the Philippines. Thank you and more power! Continue to be a blessing especially to us wandering RN's!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. hi candice, regarding the vaccine, am not sure if they do certain tests in the Phils (I'm sure they do). Coz here, they require blood tests where they specifically identify which antibodies are present in your system and from there they will require you to have the vaccination, usually it's 50 NZD per vaccine. Most of the fellows here had to have MMR, hepB vaccines. Check with the lab there if they can do the test for you.

Job applications here are usually online, so you just need your CV (they don't use the term resume), Annual Practicing Certificate and Registration. Also, they will be very particular with your references (NZ reference). Make sure you suck up (just kidding), make sure you build a rapport with the RNs and managers during your placement because they will be your main reference when you apply for a job. They won't bother calling Philippine based references. It doesn't hurt to bring your usual OTR, diploma and the works but I haven't used any of those. I only used the OTR when I applied for my post grad studies.

      All the best. Cheers!

I already have 3 yrs experience. most of my exp is in dialysis here at the hospital.. im planning to go to nz but i dnt want to go there as a student coz its really expensive.. Im planning to have the CAP slot. but before that I should pass the ielts or the oet. what do u think is better? OEt or ielts? when it comes to reviewing for oet/ielts i find it hard to review if im still working.. im planning to resign instead so that i can focus.. what bothers me is that i wont have any salary at all,, haha and what if I fail.. i dnt want to stay at home and to be a "tambay" hehe.. one more thing.. is it still ok if ever Ill apply for CAP or process... can i still process my CAP alone even without agencies? is it still advisable? coz i saw some that they did process there CAP alone without the help of any agencies.. hoping some would help me decide.. ;(

  19. Hello. I would like to ask, just in case my application will be denied because I shifted from one course to another and had 2 or more different schools attended, does anyone experienced this? I have just received my ielts score a day ago, any agency you can recommend?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. hey there, are you asking if you will be denied because of course shifting? NZNC rule before does say that you should not be a second courser, however, with the changes that has been going on, I am not quite sure now. You can always lodge a question with the Council to be sure: registration@nursingcouncil.org.nz

And sorry, I don't know any agencies, I came here on my own and that was like 4 years ago so, I'm out of loop on that.

      Cheers!

  25. Hello Rachel !
I hope you can also answer my concerns. Im still waiting for the NCNZ letter of approval its been 8 months now since I started processing. At first I applied in a Consultancy and I spend 25k on top of the fees needed for application... If I didnt quit now, I still need to pay them 60k until I have a plane ticket for their "processing fee". But because of the forums like this, It gave me an idea that you can apply on your own. I hope I will not be dissapointed on my decision that I will continue my application on my own. I just have a few concerns. While waiting for the letter of approval i already communicating with the CAP providers for their requirements and they all have diff. Reqts.! They also do not recognize volunteer experiences. Are they doing background check for the COE? Can I just change it to staff nurse? And how long did you process your visit visa? Did you still need to have a Medical Certf. And CXRY? I am currently working in Qatar and planning to apply a visa from here. Do you think it would be possible? Thank you very much!

    1. Hi, Yiska Bear! CAP providers do not recognize volunteer experiences? But I see that you're working in Qatar and I assume it's a paid experience? I think that would already be a significant factor for them to consider you.

  26. I really appreciate that you respond to questions here because it enlightens us. In my case, for instance, it facilitates me in making a decision whether I'd continue with my application or not because $650 is expensive.

I have a question, hoping you might know someone with the same situation. But anyway, I'm interested to know your thoughts. Will my experience as psychiatric nurse be recognized by the council? My three years experience is entirely as nurse attending to patients with mental health problems. Thank you!

    ReplyDelete

    1. hi there,
my apologies as i have not seen this comment but just now.. anyway, i hope you have continued your application. NCNZ will recognize your experience but you will not be able to work here as a mental health nurse unless you do further studies on mental health nursing. Mental health nursing is a special area here, you will be registered on the general and OB nursing.

      cheers!

  34. @vagabondwannabe I would like to ask. Im quite confused because I got 2 offers from 2 providers. Otago and EIT. Otago will commence on July for 9 weeks while EIT on Sept for 6weeks. The prices also are different, EIT with cheaper fees by 2000 NZD. My contract ends mid April here in Middle East and Im quite concerned with the employment gap. Do you think it matters? Which do you think is the 'better' option in terms of advantages and disadvantages on both schools?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Hi yainah, employment gap won't matter, don't worry with this. I, myself, did not have a work while waiting for the approval myself. Your decision on which school to choose will depend on you entirely. Otago's starting date will let you finish earlier,on the other hand, as i have mentioned on my other writing (http://rachelearendil.blogspot.co.nz/2014/01/competency-assessment-program-new.html), Otago Polytech's requirements is more than compared to EIT's requirements. EIT will finish later but you will have a cheaper TF and easier requirements to complete. All up to you, girl. Whatever school you choose, just do your best!

Kumpleto na most requirements ko for visa application except sa letter of accommodation na need i-provide by someone from Dunedin. Dami nag reject at nag accept hours later but ung sa Otago is a week after pa before nag reply. Even though na accept ako sa ibang school, I chose to stick with Otago kasi yun kasi sabi ng friend ko na maganda daw, and the city where it is located din. Tip ko lang, ung Otago matagal talaga mag reply, like a week to be exact. Pero patience lang, and well detailed ung emails nila sayo kaya wala ka rin masyado inquiries. Sulit ung 1 week na pag hihintay. And it is really an advantage if may kakilala ka na went through CAP just recently kasi alam mo na gagawin mo even before schools will require you. Prepared na ako kaya medyo mabilis lang. :)

  50. Very informative blog! Kudos Ms. Rachel! Just wanna share my experiences with all the readers here, I applied in the NCNZ last April 18 and got the approval letter from the council exactly June 1, 2016. My tip for those who are planning to apply in the NCNZ, apply online and prepare the requirements while preparing for the english exam (IELTS or OET). Aim for 7 or higher band score or B or higher in one sitting to avoid any delays in your application. And while waiting for the result, starting looking for an accredited school. Like for me, I got approval letter from 4 schools out of 9 schools I applied. 2 of the 4 schools, put me on the waitlist. Now, I am hoping I will have a slot in EIT.

Ms. Rachel, I have the offer letter from Otago. Would it be necessary to go on with Otago and not to wait for the other school? I am considering EIT but they are not sure if I still have the slot. Also, if I may request, can you email me @leopoldojr.galan@upou.edu.ph? I have some other concerns/further questions with regards to CAP in Otago. Thanks.

  51. @leopoldo Sharing my experience. :) So did the EIT give you the offer? Their waitlist system is good. They gave me an offer for Sept but they were kinda leaning on giving me a slot for July and gave me a 'slight' assurance that they still have a slot. I Accepted their Sept offer, paid my dues and clearly stated that I wanted the earlier intake. I was put on waitlist but was assured with a slot on Sept.. They gave me the July slot mid April. They updated the offer letter and I went to apply for visa. :) Schools normally have deadlines for you to accept. Maximize the time and wait for other offers. I didnt regret that I accepted EIT but had an offer at an earlier date from CPIT for their May intake. I was quite shocked bcz all schools were full for May intake. Maybe someone backed out. Goodluck! :)

    1. hi. can you share your experience with EIT? Currently I'm still on the waitlist for the September intake in EIT... and i am hoping for the best. On the other hand, I have a sure slot in Otago Polytechnic, which is my second option if EIT does not have available slot for september intake. Still praying I will be able to get a space in EIT. I will update you all. Thanks.

      Delete
    2. @leopoldo That was my experience. The thing is, I was willing to accept the later date at EIT (Sept). Along with ther Sept offer is the statement that they dont have the final numbers for July and we can put you on waitlist. So I waited. :) I got the slot for July eventually. What is EIT's next intake? Did they offer you at least for the next intake? Your choice depends on the urgency.

    3. Hey there guys. I was in bliss to see (come across) an EIT September intake classmate(s). I will be part of the September intake in EIT as well. I specifically chose Sept since my contract here in KSA will be completed by end of July. Sayang naman. :-) Though I got the NZNC approval January 20th.

I accomplished everything (from NZNC application, to ielts, to everything until CAP and visa requirements) while I'm here in KSA. I'm done with all the school fees, panel medicals (for visa) and medicals (for EIT). Thank God. It was quite such a drag because you might have to wait for the few weeks prior to your intake, being mindful of the validity period and expiration dates of your requirements. For sure, you know what I mean. :-)

I have been communicating with EIT for quite sometime and the Int'l student advisor has been very accommodating. I have done everything by myself and didn't have an agency. TEDIOUS pero kaya naman.

Let's share and discuss this further. Kindly email me at: GHENSON@SFHD.MED.SA

if it says "ready for assessment" then it means that they received your documents and it is now being reviewed. Usually it will take 5 days to 2 weeks before they issue a decision... sometimes they request for another supporting documents like for me they are requesting for a clinical placement certification then after they received the documents, they issued an approval letter three days after. Right now, all you need to do is to pray... =)

  63. Hello,

The further request required which should be correctly filled transcript request form is the form which you received from the nursing council, you must have not filled in properly that's why they are requesting you for a properly filled in one. The transcript with marks awarded means if I'm not wrong it should contain how many credits you have earned for each subject. For example, English 3 units like that. If you don't mind you may leave your email add and I can share with you the sample of the ones I submitted which were accepted by the nursing council. My application was very complicated that's why the processing took so long, 9 months. But Jehovah God is good, I just recently received my CAP letter.

Many thanks to Rachel for creating this blog it certainly helped several CAP applicants.

I proceeded my application by myself, good thing my nephew who applied through an agency provided all the sample

Have your criminal background check done by fit2work. There is a link in NCNZ website. You can use it too in otago. I have mine done already. So, its a double purpose thing... save time and money. Because ICHC is also part of the requirement in the NCNZ. Thanks.

  66. Howdy all! Magtatanong lang sana ako sa inyo especially sa mga nakapagbayad na sa cap tuition fees nila. Im in the philippines kasi and wala akong idea pano at saan pwede magbayad dito sa atin. Ang pagkakaalam ko kasi sa bpi na wire transfer icoconvert pa ung peso to usdollar then nzdollar. Hindi ba tayo lugi doon? Thank you po sa mga sasagot!

    1. Hello Mayex,

With BPI tama ka macoconvert from US to NZ dollar. Lugi talaga but that's how the system works kapatid😂😂

    2. Wala na po bang ibang paraan na derecho php to nzd na banko? 50k yata lugi ko dun. :( pakitulong naman po sa mga nakapag bayad na. Wala din po kasi akong agency

    3. Kung me kilala ka dito pwede ipadala sa ibang mas murang paraan gaya ng Western Union tapos yung kakilala mu ang magbabayd on your behalf. Pero nung nag enrol ako during my first time in coming to NZ sa BPI ang alam ko that time lang. Besides BPI meron ibang banks but then they still charge more or less the same service fees.

Hi. My best suggestion would be go for online application in NCNZ. There is a link there for online application. In that way you could process other papers while waiting for the IELTS. On the other hand, if you really wanted the October intake I think you need to take your IELTS now or asap. Looking for a slot is probably the most challenging part. As I said in my previous post, 3 out of 7 schools gave me the 2017 slot already. So , i think there are only limited slots remaining but who knows... just pray and hope for the best. #goodvibes If you have any other questions, you can just email me.

    1. Hello Ellen Mar,

The best thing for you to do is to email or research the websites of all approved CAP providers and inquire as to the schedule of their intakes.

The moment I received my CAP letter (Mar. 17) I emailed and researched the websites of all CAP approved providers. With my emails, I attached all the documents / credentials that I believed will positively give me an offer of place. Fortunately, and with God Jehovah's blessings and grace, after a few days, I received 3 offer of places from 3 good schools ( Jul., Sept. & Oct.). Of course, I chose the nearest date which is the July intake.

So you too will be able to find out November intakes by doing your own research and writing emails to these providers.

      Regards❤️

  73. Hi! May I ask what happens if your school will write nursing council that you did not pass the CAP course?

    ReplyDelete
  74. Hello Ms. Karen So,

The assessment process of the CAP is to determine whether students have achieved the Nursing Council standards of nursing for registration. Students must successfully pass each assessment in this programme to meet the completion criteria set out by Nursing Council of New Zealand.

Consequently, if your school will write nursing council that you did not pass the assessments (CAP) you will not achieve your registration for failure of not meeting said criteria by the nursing council!

That is why the author of this blog advised that when your preceptor is evaluating your performance you have to be around to defend yourself in case they will question that have you not met the assessments.

But from what I understand the school will provide the student additional hours in order for the student to meet Nursing Council Competencies (the additional hours may come with an added cost to the student).

    I hope this will help❤️❤️

With regards to criminal background check as part of the requirements in otago polytechnic, you can send them the form with reference number from fit2work (agency that the ncnz is requiring) and the recent nbi clearance. in that way, you can go with your application. thanks.

  87. u can apply online. the link is at the nursing council's website. you need a credit card to pay for it. it is suggested by the NCNZ to have your ICHC at least 4 weeks prior to the commencement of your CAP. since it is only valid for 6 mos. kaya mas better if huli mo na to gagawin. kelangan din kasi yan when u apply for work visa and residency. u might as well do it earlier pero once it expires, u have to pay and do it again.

  98. Hi! I’ve been reading around this blog for quite sometime now and it has been a huge help! I have a question and hopefully if you can help me out.
I’ve just received the CAP letter from NZNC and is looking for a school now to undergo the CAP course. I havent received any replies yet from the schools to which I applied. My problem is Im getting married this September. Im kinda anxious on what will happen to my applications to any of the CAP providers and NZNC cause I have used my maiden name. If God permits and my marriage will push through this September, I plan to apply for a change of name to my husband’s name, which means my maiden name on the PRC license and Passport, which I have used during my initial application in NZNC, will be changed. And I am ambivalent on what will happen then to my application in NZNC? Can anyone please advice? Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. hi, i would suggest you keep using your maiden name, it will be hard to change details at the stage you are at. Once you come here in NZ and finished with your CAP then you can change it more easily. Just a cent from me though. But try to ask if someone has the same experience and they might be able to advise better. Congratulations on your wedding!
